Birthstone colour for December
Oct 16, 2024
December's birthstone colour is blue, and has several birthstones including tanzanite and turquoise. My favourite though is blue topaz for its variety of intensity and its durability. The colour ranges from a pale sky blue, through Swiss blue which is a brighter hue, to London blue which has a darker, moodier vibe.
What makes blue topaz the perfect fit for December's birthstone
Besides its stunning colour, blue topaz has some unique qualities that make it extra special. For starters, it's one of the few blue gemstones that are both affordable and durable. Topaz ranks an 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it’s tough enough for everyday wear. So, whether you’re looking to rock a ring, earrings, or necklace, blue topaz can stand up to the demands of daily life while keeping that bright sparkle.
Plus, blue topaz is thought to have some cool meanings. It’s said to symbolise wisdom, communication, and clarity of thought. Some people believe that wearing blue topaz can help you speak your truth, inspire creativity, and even promote relaxation. So this is a gemstone that's both gorgeous and packed with positive vibes.
For an alternative December birthstone - a look at tanzanite
I also love tanzanite for its unique colour, ranging from rich royal blue to a violet-like purple, with some stones even shifting between colours depending on the light, which I think of it as purple perfection! I'm also captivated by the fact that tanzanite is found only in one place on Earth - in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Tanzanite is a little softer than topaz, at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, and has 'cleavage', and stones cut to expose the cleavage plane, while beautiful, need a little more care against hard knocks so are more suitable in jewellery pieces like earrings or brooches.
It’s a gemstone believed to bring calmness, balance, and positivity - ideal for when life gets a little chaotic. Plus, its blue-violet hues make it a great alternative to traditional blue gemstones like sapphire or topaz, but with a bit of a twist.
